A component of psychotherapy often used to supplement talk therapy is sand therapy. Sand therapy allows the client to access more unconscious material by using symbolic figurines placed in a raised sandbox. Sand therapy works similarly to dreaming, where we process issues in an in-direct, symbolic way.
The process involves your selecting at random some figures from shelves and placing those figures in the sand tray. You and I then speculate as to what meaning might be represented in the tray. While this process sounds deceptively simple, it often helps the client get in touch with previously un-thought memories or associations that are relevant to the therapy.
